KNEELING BEFORE GOD

Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God” Daniel 6:10 (NIV)

Whom are you kneeling before daily? Money, youth, man, or God? If it’s not God, I can guarantee you’re bowing before some idol. In this life, we are bound to kneel before someone. Let that someone be God.

The prophet Daniel lived in Babylon around 600 BC. He was an Israeli exile of nobility, “Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility — 4 young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace” Daniel 1: 3–4 (NIV).

Daniel was the cream of the Israeli crop, and the Babylonian king used him to serve in his palace as an advisor and administrator. Daniel’s background and intelligence are not the only things that made him exceptional. He was loyal to God, and he refused to kneel before the idols of his day. Because he refused, he was thrown into the lions den. God shut the lions' mouths.

Daniel’s friends also refused to bow down to idols. They were thrown into a fiery furnace. But they received a dramatic angelic rescue and escaped unscathed (Daniel 3).

Daniel’s list of successes followed him into old age.

The secret to his success was not bowing to anyone but God. This is evident as he prayed and physically knelt before God three times a day (Daniel 6:10).

Taking a Sabbath day’s rest allows us to set aside any idols in our lives and bow to God. It’s during this time of rest that we acknowledge God as the ultimate authority in our lives, and everything else is secondary.

Bowing to idols promises a facade of a better life that never delivers. Only God can fully satiate our human longings; everything else will lead down a path of emptiness and destruction.

ABOUT KEEPING IT REAL

What does it really mean to be a good Christian? Why do we strive to look good on the outside and remain so out of touch with God on the inside? As believers struggle to navigate the muddy waters of modern-day Christianity’s sleek exterior, this 40-day devotional is a rehabilitation for weary believers who want to move beyond merely looking good in front of others. This book creates a private daily spiritual retreat where Christians can shed their outer layers and become recognizable Jesus-followers with lives that are relatable, loving, and honest.

MY REVIEW OF KEEPING IT REAL *****

As the title suggests, these devotionals are meant for “real” people, with “real problems.” Each devotional touches on the struggles today’s Christians find in living a Holy life in our complex society. The great quotes were too many for me to include here in this short review. You will find this devotional both challenging as you examine your own walk with the Lord, as well as insightful. Each devotional is filled with Scripture. The author doesn’t offer platitudes. Rather, she hits the nail on the head. I recommend this book.
