MOMENTS TO REMEMBER

I remember the song by the Gaithers, “We Have This Moment.” It always brings tears to my eyes as I listen to the words, a stark reminder of the brevity of life.

God, in His wisdom, created us with the ability to remember. We capture them in pictures, in songs, on videos and some are forever seared in our hearts. There are moments to be treasured and moments we would rather forget. Moments that change the course of our lives. Moments that define us as human beings. Moments can bring despair or ecstasy, passion or apathy.

Some moments change our concept of what it means to be a winner.

An article quoting great sports moments lists the following as the greatest moment in baseball: In 1951 in the third game of the National League Playoff, the Brooklyn Dodgers took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth against their rival New York Giants. The Giants scored a run before Bobby Thomson dug in for his at-bat with two runners on base. Thomson sent the ball into the left-field stands for the 5-4 win and sent the Giants to the World Series. A great upset against the expected win.

There are moments in history that changed the world forever.

According to a History Channel documentary, the battle of Thermopylae unified the independent Greek states in an epic battle where a mere 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians stayed behind a fleeing army to defend the only penetrable pass into the Greek territories. Although defeat was certain, the time bought by this stand allowed the rest of the armies to regroup. Eventually, Xerxes was thwarted. Ultimately, through Greek unification, democracy was formed.

The movie Frequency is about a son who laments his fireman’s father’s death. Thirty years later, the son finds his father’s ham radio and through a window of time, he communicates with his father in the past. He tells his father of the mistake he made that caused his death and changed the future.

We all want to take moments back and relive them to make our present more palatable.

There are also moments, God moments, when the rest of our lives, and potentially the lives of many, are altered because of a choice we made or a choice made by another. For Joseph, that moment came when he was put into a pit by his jealous brothers and sold into slavery to the Egyptians. His whole life changed from what he expected, being a favored son in his father’s household, to becoming second in command in Egypt. The greatest moment came when his brothers knelt at his mercy. He would have been justified to treat them as they had treated him. Instead, he chose to forgive, to bring his father and brothers into Egypt, thus saving a small tiny nation, the nation that gave birth to the Messiah. Joseph understood that what was first a wrongful act, God used for good.

As God’s child, our greatest moments could be when we have failed the worst or feel that we are, like Joseph, at the lowest level of our lives – when we realize that life will not happen for us the way we hoped or dreamed. It is then that God has the opportunity to redefine that moment. If we give Him that moment, the ultimate result will bring blessings. “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven...” (Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV).
