MY FAVORITE BIBLE VERSE

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

— John 1:1

There are so many Bible verses that resonate with me. But John’s first verse stands tall at this moment in my life.

Like other storytellers, my writing begins with God’s inspiration, His word. When an idea forms, it flows from my head to my hand, and I write each word, knowing he’s guiding my fingers. Being his instrument, I convey a story wrapped around a blend of his love and encouragement. But reminded that I’m not the genesis of this creation.

God’s storytelling streams through those of us chosen.

The word, synonymous with God, flowers into a sentence, a paragraph, a chapter, a story.

God murmured to me later in life, and I’m honored he called me to create through the medium of writing.

With God, the Word, I open my mind, and a light emerges, pastels and bolder colors painted on the canvas of my imagination, and God’s word imprints, whispering for me to write this story.

When I resist, I feel God’s nudge, so I take out my computer and type. By listening to his gentle but firm command, I begin, one word at a time. Then something happens. I become immersed, experiencing a sense of exhilaration. Each word becomes an elixir, God’s dazzling potion, providing me the sustenance to keep writing.

How about editing?

I imagine what God might say.

Show the best of me, with an exquisite display of my creation.

Polish, sculpt, do what you must.

Excruciating? Some might say yes, but a necessary endeavor.

Could more be required? A sharper scalpel to the words? They may require further slicing, cutting, or eliminating to allow them to sparkle like fine diamonds on velvet.

I love writing, but there are times I wonder why I’m putting myself through this.

God sends me a gentle but strong retort.

It’s my gift to you. Do not surrender.

Two years ago, my husband, Steve, took a one-way flight to Heaven. My greatest fan departed from his life on earth. He had cheered and celebrated when I received a contract for my first novel, but two months before the release, God decided enough suffering and brought him home.

Tears stream down my face while I write, but I know Steve smiles from afar, and I hear him say, listen to God.

So I do, and I remind myself of the privilege. While I grow older, I continue to grow, and God’s word echoes loud and clear: The word is God; please Him with yours.

ABOUT DARLENE CORBETT

Darlene Corbett has been serving others as a licensed psychotherapist for over thirty years. With her wealth of experience in human behavior, she decided to write down her thoughts to inspire a larger audience. This set the stage for her book, Stop Depriving The World of You, published by Sound Wisdom in 2018.

She continued writing nonfiction until she heard God whisper again. And his call prompted her to take a risk and dip her toes into fiction. Visible, a women’s fiction about second chances, was published by WordCrafts Press in the spring of 2024, and in August, she won the 2024 Storytrade Book Awards for Christian Fiction in the Contemporary category.

And right now? Her contemporary romance, Mesmerize, will be published in February of 2026 which has themes of a modern-day, Christian Scheherazade story.

When not writing or seeing clients, Darlene immerses herself in a variety of novels and tries to support other authors of faith. In addition, she loves animals with dogs being number one. Taking care of her beloved Shih Tzu, Stevie, puts a smile on her face.
