COMMENTS BY LINDA WOOD RONDEAU

Can Suffering have a purpose?

As I read Pebbles' memoir, about her long road of challenges after what should have been a fatal car accident, I was impressed with how God placed persons in her life to give hope and encouragement, ultimately leading to salvation; not from the long-term pain and suffering, but finding purpose and joy within her circumstances. I recommend this book to all, because no human is without challenge … whether emotional, physical, social, or spiritual.

These verses come to mind:
Romans 5:3-5

"Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."\ This passage beautifully captures the idea that suffering is not in vain—it leads to perseverance, growth, and ultimately hope, echoing the message of finding purpose and encouragement in long-term pain.

2 Corinthians 12:9

"But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me." This verse speaks to God meeting us in our darkest pain and transforming weakness into strength through His grace.

Psalm 34:18

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." This verse is a reminder that you are never alone in suffering—God is near and offers comfort and rescue.

Isaiah 40:31

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." This verse encourages perseverance and hope, promising renewed strength for those who trust in God.

Each of these verses directly addresses the themes in Finding Faith in the Storm: suffering with purpose, perseverance, hope, and the assurance of God’s presence. They offer honest answers and heartfelt encouragement, just as Pebbles Wireman does in her story.
