The Elephant in the Room

After reading several articles and books referring to an “old man smell” and an “old woman” smell, I became curious. I shower every day, and I wash my hair most days. I don’t smell anything on me, my clothes, or in the house. Do I stink? If I do, why? What can I do about it?

So I did a little research.

Yes. Older people do have a natural body odor that is a normal process as we age. It’s not like a switch that happens in an instant. But the process typically begins after age 40.

Ouch!

The odor is described as a subtle, musty, or grassy scent often associated with older adults and aging homes, or as one person said, “Grandma’s house smell.”

The good news? “Senior scent” is not caused by poor hygiene. In fact, the odor is described as actually more pleasant than the smell that plagues teenagers or young adults.

"Well, I don't smell anything on myself!"

Because 2-nonenal is continuously generated by the skin, seniors experience olfactory adaptation, also known as “nose blindness.” Because our bodies produce this scent continuously, our brains filter it out as "background noise." In other words, we just get used to it.

Another caveat: age-related compounds tend to evaporate at room temperature and don’t linger on the skin, but will leak into the surrounding air.

Why Does It Happen?

The primary culprit behind this distinct scent is a chemical compound called 2-nonenal.

As skin matures, it begins producing more omega-7 unsaturated fatty acids while its natural antioxidant protection decreases. When exposed to air, they degrade through a process called lipid peroxidation, creating 2-nonenal.

Women often produce less of the sharp "old man" smell than men.

2-nonenal is not water-soluble, so it does not wash entirely away with regular soap. Therefore, it can linger on the skin and transfer to clothing and bedsheets.

So what can I do to smell younger?

Age progresses whether we like it or not. But there are some strategies you can use to reduce and manage that Grandma-or-Grandpa scent.

. Persimmon extract or green tea soaps.

. Heavily wash the chest, neck, upper back, and especially behind the ears where the compound seems to concentrate the most. Scrubbing aggressively with standard, harsh bar soaps won't wash it away and tends to actually increase 2-nonenal.

. Wash clothes and bedding frequently in warm or hot water. Use an odor-eliminating laundry booster.

. Air out rooms daily; use a HEPA-filter vacuum on carpets and mattress pads.

. Drink plenty of water and reduce high-fat dairy and red meat.

Aging is still a beautiful thing!  Think of your aging scent, like gray hair, as a rite of passage!

What do you think? I welcome hacks, tips, or product recommendations. I did a quick look at Walmart and found a wide variety of green tea products for hygiene. I assume they’d be available in most stores.

Had you ever heard of 2-nonenal before reading this?
