I learned some fascinating facts about the heroes listed in Hebrews 11 that made them even more relatable. For instance, did you know:

Gideon’s famous fleeces came from doubt—not faith?

Three heroines played a role in saving baby Moses from death in the Nile?

Daniel willingly faced the lions’ den over a personal conviction—not a biblical mandate?

What Was the Purpose of Gideon’s Fleece?

You may have heard of people “putting out a fleece” to find God’s will. But Gideon wasn’t seeking direction—God had already given that. Gideon wanted reassurance. Could he trust God to keep His promise?

God graciously answered Gideon’s request—not once, but twice. That confirmation gave Gideon the courage to take the next step.

Like Gideon, we often know what we’re supposed to do; we just need assurance that the Lord is with us. Thankfully, our High Priest stands ready to supply the grace we need. We only need to ask.

What Three Women Helped Save Moses’s Life?

Faith moved Jochebed, Moses’s mother, to disobey Pharaoh’s edict to throw Hebrew baby boys into the Nile (Heb. 11:23). When she could no longer hide him, she placed him in a small ark among the reeds of the river.

Miriam, his sister—still a child herself—watched over him. When Pharaoh’s daughter (our third heroine) discovered the baby, Miriam’s quick thinking to offer their mother as a wet nurse gave Pharaoh’s daughter time to form a plan for introducing him into her royal household.

It made sense for a mother and sister to risk the king’s wrath. But what moved the king’s daughter to defy her father’s decree and adopt Moses?

What Personal Habit Sent Daniel to the Lions’ Den?

Daniel had a daily habit of praying three times a day before an open window. When jealous officials plotted against him, they tricked the king into signing a law that banned prayer to anyone but the king for thirty days.

Daniel could have prayed silently or behind closed doors. No law required him to pray in front of an open window. But Daniel stayed faithful to his practice. Knowing Daniel’s practice, his enemies caught him praying.

Ironically, the habit they used against him was the one that sustained him. God sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths.

And what became of Daniel’s enemies? Read Daniel 6 for the dramatic ending.

“And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets,
who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised;
who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword;
whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies”
(Hebrews 11:32–34, NIV)

***** MY REVIEW

Little Strength Big God challenged me to remember that, whatever my calling or obstacles, God is faithful to his promises, even when my strength seems to fail. He strengthens and encourages me to serve Him according to His purposes. Conveniently divided into easy-to-understand segments, I recommend this book for individual or group study. Each Biblical example is accompanied by current application, anecdotes, and words of encouragement. Scholarly but practical. The depth and richness of her Biblical examples demonstrate that the author is well-studied in the material presented.

I recommend this book.
