THE HOUND OF HEAVEN
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him (1 John 3:1 NIV).
In context 1 John 3:1-11
We have difficulty understanding what it means to be God’s child, let alone live as a child of God. We are mega independent and don’t want to rely on anyone else. That is, until we get in trouble.
The child cries for independence, absolute control of his environment. She will balk at discipline as naturally as she spits out castor oil.
Spiritually, we are much like stubborn children. We expect God to change His laws to suit our desires. When we stumble and fall, we prefer to blame him rather than take accountability for our own poor choices.
God does not give up on us.
We might move away from Him, but He never moves away from us.
He delivered his beloved Israel from Egypt and sustained her in the desert, despite her rebellion and stubbornness. He gave her kings and prophets. When her stubborn heart continued to resist, He sent his only Son, His very representation as an offering and way for reconciliation.
1 John 3 explains what the great love of the Father means. That is because of this love, perfect and holy, He sent Jesus to take on the sins of a rebellious world. A world that strives to live independent lives from God’s plan for us.
He loves us with that same everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3) as He demonstrated time and time again for Israel. He is the Hound of Heaven who relentlessly pursues. His discipline is not meted with vengeance but delivered with mercy— and infinitesimal patience—a patience that surpasses our hardest resistance.
PRAYER
Hound of Heaven, thank you for your pursuit. I now surrender to you those stubborn streaks that have kept me from knowing the fullness of your unrelenting love.
