Psalm 121 (NLT)
A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.
I look up to the mountains—
does my help come from there?
My help comes from the Lord,
who made heaven and earth!
He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel
never slumbers or sleeps.
The Lord himself watches over you!
The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.
The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon at night.
The Lord keeps you from all harm
and watches over your life.
The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go,
both now and forever.
The Psalmist glanced at the hills … the high places where people build their thrones to idols. He knew his help came from God, who didn’t isolate himself from the people. The high places of idolatry were evidence of people striving to find salvation by what they do, whereas his God was always near, ever present in the time of trouble. His God preserved and protected.
This psalm was one of ascent for pilgrims as they made their way to Jerusalem. It was also used during a feast or to honor a religious holiday.
Again, in Psalms, we read:
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever
Psalm 107:1
This is our response to a God who is approachable without climbing a mountain, self-mutilation, or excessive efforts to reach, such as the pagans did. God’s people had instant access to the Lord and a ready listening Savior.
Hezekiah knew the Lord was his protector. When threatened by Sennacherib, Hezekiah worked to resist, but not before seeking the Lord. He advised the people,
Be strong and courageous! Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side! 8 He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles for us!” Hezekiah’s words greatly encouraged the people (2 Chronicles 32:7-8 NLT)
I love these verses because they remind me of our ever-present God who requires us to simply be in His presence. Our good deeds flow outwardly from a Savior who abides inwardly.
