Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.
Isaiah 6-8 NIV
There is a commercial that shows a new athletic facility attendee who happily jumps on the scale, then rushes to the treadmill, works out for about ten minutes, then rushes back to the scale and is frustrated because he has lost no weight.
Weight loss and health improvement are not achieved overnight or even with one slam-dunk bout of exercise.
Likewise, we think that our Christian development should be instantaneous. We are unwilling to put our Faith into daily practice to heighten our awareness of how we should respond in our daily living.
Isaiah scolded the Israelites who thought themselves superior because of their rigorous fasting.
Our true light does not shine from a good deed done for the sake of doing a good deed.
Rather, our true testament to the light that is within us emanates from what we desire. Our desires dictate our actions. Then our good deeds will come as a natural extension of the nature of Christ within us.
