The Intimacy of God

Psalm 113:5 NIV

Who is like the Lord our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,/my-favorite-bible-verses
who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?

We can praise God because the One who is High is intimately Nigh (1)

We were on the way to the golf course when the accident happened. We saw the red car barreling through the stop sign, but it was too late to avoid a collision. Just as the car hit the passenger door, I felt something wrap around me like a blanket. I knew it was God’s presence. Our car was totaled, but we experienced no injury. We had the car towed to the garage, were given a loaner, transferred our clubs, and drove to the golf course, only a few minutes late for a tee time. Golfers understand the sanctity of a tee time.

From then on, I knew nothing would befall me outside of God’s knowledge and permission.

It isn't easy to imagine an all-powerful entity who is ever-present. Constantly Abiding as the old hymn says. The Psalmist said in 139, “Where can I go from your Spirit?” (v7) He is above, below, beside, and around.

The One who loves us most also created the heavens and the earth. The One who stands beside us also is Sovereign over kings. And another hymn of old, Blessed Assurance

The One who knows the number of hairs on our head is also the Alpha and Omega, beginning and the end.

We are not meant to understand how this can be. But we can praise Him that it is so.
