Psalm 37:4

Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

What do we do when we don’t get what we think we deserve?

We grumble.

We want to go back to the way things used to be.

We get bitter.

We unfriend people who get on our nerves. 

It’s all about us. We want to feel good and avoid discomfort and the unpleasant. So we complain, sometimes like a noisy bird. 

Psalm 37 provides some good advice when we are unhappy about life and feel we are not getting our just deserts.

First of all, we should remember that God is our friend. He will not delete us.

Then according to verse 1: Don’t fret. When we are in a constant state of complaining, we fail to see the good God has done…in the fast, now, and will do in our future.

Then the psalmist advises to trust the Lord. As we recall His goodness, we can ease ourselves into our Savior’s arms, knowing He is working all things together for our good. Even those unpleasant moments that seem to stretch beyond our endurance.

The next step is to commit. Commit our actions to what we know pleases the Lord. This is the action that comes from stopping our worry and trusting God.

Then let us be still before Him. Listen for His voice. We cannot hear him through the clamor of our unhappy voicings.

Once we have followed the above steps, God empowers us to refrain from wrong thoughts and deeds and lead a life that is pleasing to Him.
