WHAT TOMORROW MAY BRING

Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1 NIV

“Don’t worry,” my mother said. “I’ll be there. You can count on me.”

The Vacation Bible School Director was looking forward to the two-week session that would start the next day. My mother felt she was well prepared and ready to take on the second-graders.

The morning came, and the flu descended on my mother, turning her into a weak blob that could barely get out of bed. There was no way she would make it to VBS. She managed to make a disappointing phone call.

The director reassured my mother, that the faculty would adapt. Still, she felt she had let the church and her friend down.

From that day on, Mother prefaced all determination with,

“If the Lord wills, and I believe he does.”

I learned from that incident as well. We can never be certain of tomorrow. Only God knows what will lay ahead in the fog. That is why we need to surrender our well-orchestrated plans to His will and care.

If we have given our day to Him and it goes awry, we can be certain there’s a hidden gem in the catastrophe. Because He is a good God.
