SUMMATION OF THE LAW

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your good?

Deuteronomy 10:12-13 NIV

Moses had been giving a summation of the Law as God had revealed it to him. His purpose was to prepare the Israelites as they were about to cross the Jordan River.

In these two verses, Moses recaps the intent of all the Law God had given to him.

Above all else, God wants to put a Spirit within us that is prone toward love. Obedience without love is meaningless. He desires for us to love others as He loves them.

Essentially, the whole law boiled down to these two commands:

love God and love others.

If we focus on these two things, the Law makes perfect sense. The Lord will bring to remembrance what is right when we need to make any kind of decision.

Peter echoes Moses's teaching and that of Christ when he sums up the life we have in Christ:

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins 1 Peter 4:8 NIV
