IS GOD FORGETFUL?

During that long period, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.

Some folks are concerned about the phrase “He remembered his covenant with Abraham.” Did God forget His people and then one day wake up to the fact they were suffering?

We “remember” birthdays because the date is important to us, so we acknowledge those we love. We remember loved ones who have gone before us by putting flowers or tokens on their graves. To remember does not necessarily mean a sudden jolt of memory. It is an acknowledgment of something important.

God is not oblivious to our conundrums. He hears, remembers, sees, and knows. And at the right time, He responds.

These verses describe God’s response to the cries of His people. First, he heard their groaning. Secondly, He remembered. “For God to remember is God acting on the promises He has made.” Thirdly, God saw the blight of His people, noticing their needs. “The Hebrew is simply “God knew.”

These actions of God (“hear”, “remember”, “see”, “know”) are indications of His faithfulness to His covenant people.

Believer, are you feeling God has forgotten you? Take heart. He hears, sees, and remembers your needs. He is the God who knows, and he is already active in your deliverance.

Trust his timing.
