Even to your old age and gray hairs
    I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
I have made you and I will carry you;
    I will sustain you and I will rescue you.

Isaiah 46:4 NIV

The older I get the more meaningful this verse is to me.

A few years ago, I came across this verse several days in a row. When I gazed into the mirror, the Lord said, “Do you trust me with the rest of your life?”

“Yes, Lord,” I answered. “Sometimes, though, I forget how faithful you are to me.”

“Let your hair go to natural gray. Each time you look in the mirror, you will remember my promise to always be with you.”

And so I did.

There are times when I want to go blonde again. Sometimes, the devil obscures my memory and makes me see only old age. The sin of vanity bangs at the door of my resolve.

Then … the Lord gently nudges me into remembrance.

We don’t think about how fast life passes when we're younger. We are too busy with work and family obligations, in addition to our church and civic commitments. Before we can blink once, we’re in our fifties. Before we blink again we’re approaching an eighth decade. We ask ourselves, “Where did the years go? Where were you, God in all this?”

Now in the sunset years, I have the privilege of looking back and seeing God in places that, at the time, I had not noticed. He was there when financial crises hit, when cancer and other illnesses struck, when circumstances made me a caregiver to my elderly parents, when our children left home to follow their paths, and the many changes in locations due to employment decisions and simply wanting to be nearer our grandchildren.

As I remember how God had worked in and through all the events of my life, I can face an uncertain future in my remaining years. He has shown me time and time again, with every breath I take, that He cares for me, for those I love, and for those with whom I may encounter.
