TO
HAVING THE PRIME OF MY LIFE
Nobody that I ever knew said that, but it’s an attitude I decided to adopt when I reached the age for AARP membership.
I was purchasing an item for a gift at a local store, and the clerk rang up the sale. With a huge smile gracing her lips, she said, “You’re entitled to our senior discount, so this will be ten percent off.”
My first reaction, as I stood in shock, was being mortified that I actually looked like I was fifty-five years old. Then as I signed the ticket with the discount, I decided this might not be so bad.
Indeed, I began finding all sorts of discounts from grocery stores, hotels, and even airline tickets. The more years I added, the more perks I found, and I learned not to be embarrassed to ask for help if I couldn’t reach something on a shelf or when someone jumped in to offer before I could ask.
Although God sent some things into my life that were not rosy and fun, relying on His great promises helped me enjoy the blessings He sent me. Some memory lapses even gave me a few laughs along the way. For example, I attended a wedding where I spent some time talking with two women who were both mothers of former students of mine at the high school where I taught. One woman I remembered right away, but the other woman’s name would not come. From Saturday until Wednesday at choir practice, I stewed, trying to remember. I leaned over to the woman sitting next to me and pointed to the lady in question sitting in the row in front of us.
“Patty, what is Inez Vaughn’s name?”
My friend jerked her head back. “What?”
With heat filling my face, I shook my head and said, “Never mind, I just remembered.”
We laughed then and laughed even more as we both told Inez about my lapse after choir. Embarrassment became a funny story she likes to tell to this day.
I am now eighty-fours old. I have the choice of looking at life as a long series of health problems, aches, and pains, and loss, or I can embrace where I am and look ahead with anticipation for wherever God will lead me next.
