EMBRACING MY INNER BOOMER
Monday, April 20, 2020 by BARBARA BRITTON

PLEASE WELCOME

BARBARA BRITTON

TO

HAVING THE PRIME OF MY LIFE

I have one of my sons living with me temporarily. My son is in his twenties. Recently, I’ve heard him respond to me “Mom, you’re such a Boomer.” Well, I am a Baby Boomer and proud of it. I let him know that, too. I embrace my “old” practices of living life because they are important, especially in this time of social distancing and stay-at-home orders. Being a Boomer has helped me encourage fellow members of my church, my neighbors, and my family.

I love Hebrews 10:24-25

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as we see the Day approaching.” (NIV)

Baby Boomers didn’t grow up with electronic mail. We wrote letters. I still write letters and send actual paper cards to people. With some of my older friends isolated in facilities at the moment, and some having memory issues, I have started sending cards so that they will know I care.

Telephones used to be bolted to the wall and have elastic cords tethering the caller to a certain spot in the home. I still remember staying up past eleven o’clock to place a long-distance call because the rates were cheaper late at night. Texting is a great way to communicate, but there is nothing like hearing a friend’s voice. I embrace my inner-Boomer by picking up the phone and calling people. Don’t forget to pray on the phone as well.

In the past weeks, my church experience has been on Facebook Live. Our church isn’t meeting due to a statewide stay-at-home order. My family still participates in our living room. We sing and stand when appropriate. I live by the Boomer saying: early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy, and wise. No sleeping in at the Britton house on Sunday morning. I’m encouraged when I see the large number in the corner of the screen of church members participating in our service. Now, I know that Facebook is not a Boomer invention. But we Boomers know how to get up early and avoid the Bedside Baptist and Pillow Creek syndromes. Find some way to worship the Lord whether it be a TV service, radio broadcast or podcast, or any other way these young ones have created.

Our world may look a little different at the moment, but we can all come together and use our life experiences to encourage one another in Christ, and shine Christ’s love into a hurting world.

He is risen!

He is risen indeed!

ABOUT CLAIMING CANNAN: MILCAH’S JOURNEY

When the tribal elders make marriage a requirement for claiming her land, Milcah bat Zelophehad must find a betrothed straightaway. The only problem in finding a husband is that all her suitors were slain while conquering the land of Canaan. Men avoid her in order to stay alive.

After praying to God to send her a bold suitor, a man from her father's clan plummets from a tree right on top of her. Is this God answering prayer, or a foolish antic by Eli, the war-scarred brother from one of her clan's rival families?

Will settling in Canaan sort out Milcah's troubles, or have her woes just begun?

“Claiming Canaan” is available on Amazon, B&N and wherever books are sold. Libraries can order it too.

Hi Carol. Yes, playing outside and creating your own drama with dolls and trucks is better for the creative mind. See where it led us. Thanks for joining us.

Great post, Barb. And, being a boomer myself, I can totally relate. When I was a child, we didn’t have all these electronic devices to occupy our minds and keep us quiet. I used my imagination and made up stories to occupy myself. Who knew I was preparing to be a writer. LOL

Hi Denise. My son thinks calling me a "Boomer" is funny, but I embrace it. I'm glad you stopped by.
