LIVING WITH CHANGE

PLEASE WELCOME

MARTIN WILES

TO

HAVING THE PRIME OF MY LIFE

He thought he wanted change … but he didn’t.

“I want to go to big-boy school,” he said—but he really didn’t.

Our middle grandson—three at the time—thought he wanted to go to school. And he had mastered what we told him he had to before he could go: going to the potty. Now he was ready for summer to end and school to start. Until after the first day.

His visit to the room before enrolling had gone well. He played with the toys. I suppose he thought that was all he would do for the entire day. After the first day, his excitement vanished. On the second day, I didn’t hear, “I want to go to big-boy school.” Rather, he loudly proclaimed, “I don’t want to go to big-boy school.” And, “I want my Meme.” But he soon settled down, and I thought we had won our battle with change.

By the third day, he had figured out work was involved in this school thing. I dropped him off at his room and listened to him scream, “I want my Meme.” Although he soon quieted down, he was no more ready to go to school the following day than he had been the previous day.

After the third day, we were down to a whimpering, “I want my Meme.” He warmed a little more to his teacher and was a little more excited each day when he came home. He loved painting, singing, drawing, and going outside for recess. By the end of the first week, the whimper had disappeared. He walked into his room like a big boy.

The change came slowly for my grandson, but he adapted. Not so the rich young ruler whom Jesus encountered: “But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions” (Matthew 19:22 NLT).

The young rich man wanted to know the requirements for eternal life. Jesus told him to obey the Ten Commandments. When he said he’d done that, Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give them to the poor. That command hit him where it hurt. He chose not to change…and went away sad.

Change is inevitable at any time during our lifetime—but especially as we age. It comes whether I want it to or not. Some changes I can control, but many I can’t. Our grandson had no choice in the school change. He had to go to school. Legally, he could have waited a few more years, but eventually, he would have had to attend.

When I buck life’s unavoidable changes, things happen. Misery comes—just as my grandson would have been had he chosen to keep resisting the school thing. I also won’t grow. In just a short period, our grandson has grown intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. Change does that through its uncomfortableness.

Changes also teach me flexibility—what life is all about. Life involves numerous relationships, and relationships require flexibility to work and be healthy. No longer could my grandson do his home-with-Meme routine. He had to adjust to an entire class routine.

With the aging process comes physical, mental, and emotional changes. Rather than buck them, we can learn to look at them as God-sent or God-allowed. Either way, He’s behind them and will guide us through them. And when we accept the changes, we’ll be healthier people with a storehouse of lessons to teach the younger generation.

ABOUT A WHISPER IN THE WOODS

A Whisper in the Woods: Quiet Escapes in a Noisy World was birthed from Martin Wiles' numerous treks with his two children and his middle brother in mountainous areas on the eastern coast of the United States. Through these hiking and camping experiences, God taught him valuable lessons that have seen him through many difficult life experiences.

Martin's weekly devotionals found in A Whisper in the Woods take the reader out of the noise that often accompanies living in this world and into the quiet escapades of wooded areas where the voice of God is more clearly heard.

As you walk with Martin through the mountain valleys and over the high summits, you too will hear God whisper words of comfort to you.
