FRIENDS AT ANY AGE

PLEASE WELCOME

ERIN UNGER

TO

HAVING THE PRIME OF MY LIFE

Every now and then I get a chance to guest post here about prime timers and I love it. As you may—or may not—recall, the majority of my friendships are with women very senior to me. Now I am starting to creep toward their age but it has always been this way since I can remember. I’ve often contemplated this phenomenon but never figured out a clear answer as to why this is. Is it because my biggest hangout spots are church luncheons, sewing groups, and craft nights? The moms of young children tend to be too busy for these events. But not the older generation. They value these times together as much as I do.

But that brings another question. Does it matter that I prefer to be friends with older people? Perhaps God just wanted it to be and so it is. But I would never change it. The wisdom and character of a prime timer are beyond anything I’d get from someone my own age. Maybe they don’t still have teenagers at home or young adult children who are still getting their feet under them, but they sure do remember what it was like. Women my age are running their kids from one activity to another at break-neck speed, not working on valuable friendships as I like to do. I do not share the ideals of my generation. Working moms. Kids shipped off to daycares. Children involved in way too many activities to allow the kids to just be kids. How much better is it to crochet beside a buddy with a common goal, or to snack on hors d’oeurves as you wait for a speaker to start with someone in a quieter stage of life? I say it is the best.

How much better would our society be if the younger generations looked to the older for answers? Even the Bible speaks on this issue.

Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.

I do look to my elders and sit at their knees for answers about issues. Their understanding of biblical instruction is invaluable. And their knowledge of the good old days when life was simpler shows me that there is a better way of living, a better way of doing things than the crazy norm of today.

As a writer, readers will often find wonderful grandma types in my stories that enrich the storyline. I must have them in my stories as much as in my life!

I thank God that he has sent me so many great older friends. I will sit at coffee with them any day.

ABOUT SUMMER FLASHBURN

Worthington Investigations is on another grisly case in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

When P.I. Shauna Pratley heads up the investigation for Christopher Newen, a rural firefighter, she only wants to solve his father’s murder not fall in love. She’s struggling to decide if God’s directing her to leave the team and re-enlist in the Army.

Christopher Newen may be used to the blazes of fire but not the heat ricocheting between him and Shauna. He needs the team’s help but has no intention of letting flames ignite between him and Shauna...yet her protective nature and fun-loving personality draw him in more than he wants to admit.

How will they work together to find a killer without letting love get in the way? Will they have to admit maybe God has used the horrors of evil to bring them together for good?

ABOUT ERIN UNGER

Erin Unger was raised in the hills of Virginia, exploring abandoned houses and reading the scariest books she could find. After marrying so young it would make a great romance novel, she has enjoyed an exciting life with her hubby. But her fast-paced life sometimes rivals the suspense in her books thanks to all her mostly grown children and a couple grandkids.
